Military Mental Health Support Programs

Military Behavioral Health Support

Vista del Mar Hospital (VDMH) has historically provided inpatient care for military service members and their families, including inpatient adult and adolescent stabilization and safety and adult partial hospitalization. In May 2012, Vista del Mar expanded treatment for service members by developing an inpatient Trauma Treatment Program and Women’s Military Support Program for both active duty military and veterans diagnosed with PTSD, Acute Stress Disorder and/or other co-occurring conditions.

Trauma Treatment Program for Veterans with PTSD

Our hospital environment in Ventura, California, allows military patients to feel support from their community while working to better understand and manage their combat stress reactions. Because VDMH understands that the military lifestyle is unique, our trauma program staff have received extensive, specialized training in military culture, combat stress and the most effective treatment approaches for PTSD and other trauma-related conditions.

The modalities used for individual therapy are:

  • Prolonged Exposure
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy
  • Seeking Safety
  • EMDR

We have organized our trauma program to include:

  • Family interventions
  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Chemical dependency treatment
  • 12-step groups
  • Physical fitness activities
  • Equine assisted psychotherapy
  • Adjunctive services to accommodate our patients specific needs.

Our Trauma Treatment Program is a 30-day inpatient mental health program that follows an evidence-based curriculum for treating PTSD, Acute Stress Disorder and Combat Operational Stress, as well as co-occurring substance abuse disorders and mood disorders in accordance with the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of PTSD. Vista del Mar’s Military Support Program provides a multidisciplinary approach, and offers a structured and supportive environment where military personnel can receive intensive individual and group treatment.

Women’s Military Mental Health Program

Vista del Mar’s Women’s Military Support Program recognizes the unique needs and traumatic experiences of female service members. Our highly trained staff strives to provide a compassionate and supportive environment for treatment. This gender-sensitive inpatient program focuses on the treatment of female service members suffering from traumatic stress reactions related to combat exposure, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), sexual assault, childhood abuse (physical or sexual) or domestic violence.

Individual therapy sessions are offered 2 to 3 times per week for female veterans with PTSD. Primary therapists will provide daily check ins and supportive counseling/case management. Daily group therapy includes cognitive skills, communication skills, coping skills, interpersonal processing and relapse prevention. Couples and family therapy is encouraged either in person or via phone as well. Adjunctive therapies, both on and off site, include art/music/movement therapy, trauma-sensitive yoga, equine-assisted psychotherapy and therapeutic outdoor activities.

Detox and Dual Diagnosis Program

This program is approximately 5 to 10 days of stabilization treatment for service members struggling with mental health issues compounded by chemical dependency. We offer medically supervised detoxification, group therapy focused on psychoeducation, relapse prevention, and a 12-step program. A military behavioral health program case manager will provide discharge planning for continuity of care and assistance with the recovery process. In addition, the military case manager will coordinate ongoing communication with on-base providers, family and social support.

Partial Hospitalization Program

For service members that are in need of short-term outpatient treatment or those that are stepping down from inpatient care, our Partial Hospitalization Program offers day treatment at our Ventura hospital for psychiatric conditions or dual-diagnosis issues. The Partial Hospitalization Program is offered weekdays from 0900-1500, and focuses on education, group counseling and medication management.

Military Mental Health Care for Dependents

Vista del Mar Hospital recognizes the additional stress, hardship and sacrifices that military families encounter and live with daily. VDMH offers support to military families (spouses and dependents) with short, intensive inpatient hospitalization programs designed for crisis stabilization and safety for adolescents from age 12 to 17, as well as adult dependents. Additionally, we offer detox/dual diagnosis and partial hospitalization programs to military spouses and adult dependents in Southern California.

How to Refer

Active Duty admissions to the Military Support Program (Trauma Treatment and Women’s Program) are tailored to each service member’s needs. The first step is to call and schedule an in-person or phone assessment with our Military Liaison. The Military Liaison will collaborate with the chain of command, medical/mental health providers and other supportive military personnel to facilitate admission and insurance authorization with UHC/Tricare. Prior to admission, TAD/TDY/PTAD orders must be received as part of the authorization process. There is no need to bring your military medical records. To ensure a smooth admission process, please contact the Military Liaison at 805-653-6434 x209 during normal business hours (Monday through Friday/0900-1700 hours) prior to arrival at our facility.

For after-hour admissions, please contact 805-889-4459. For all other admissions, including military dependent care, please contact our Assessment and Referral Department at 805-653-6434.
